Jacobson announces gubernatorial candidacy

PORTLAND (May 16): Matt Jacobson announced his candidacy for Governor of Maine last week at Ocean Gateway. The announcement was followed by the Jacobson for Governor campaign's inaugural fund-raising event.

During remarks, he outlined his decision to run for Governor of Maine. "I want to work with each of you to lift Maine up so every one of us can enjoy a brighter future," he said. "I honestly believe Maine can be world class -- but not without some real effort."

Creating private sector jobs is the key to making Maine's economy competitive in a global economy, he said, and accomplishing that means radically rethinking how the state approaches economic development.

To compete, Maine will need to implement creative and innovative solutions to boost the state's workforce and economy rather than relying on government programs to provide the answers.

Jacobson, 48, is president and Chief Executive Officer of Maine & Company, an organization dedicated to business attraction and job creation in Maine.

He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and holds an MBA from Chapman University. Jacobson was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He and his wife, Kate, a physician, reside in Cumberland and have two children, Hank and Maggie.

In a press release, Jacobson cited work with national and international companies, and his success in bringing jobs to Maine towns from Farmington to Belfast.

"I create jobs -- it's what I do," he said. "For the last 15 years, that's what I've done working in the private sector. As Governor, working with each of you, I will help guide our state toward its full potential -- something we have not yet realized. But we can get there."

Jacobson said he seeks to reduce the state's burdensome regulatory and tax policies, and will champion efforts to lower high energy costs that weigh down businesses across the state. He said he planned to revamp Maine's educational system and more directly link education programs with needed job skills.

"My vision for Maine is simple," he said. "We become world class. We do that by focusing our job growth on what we do best. And we confront, and overcome, the obstacles that are holding us back. We've had enough studies, task forces, and commissions -- now we need to act.

"I believe in the bottom of my heart that we can do this," Jacobson said. "But to get there, we need a new leader with a clear vision of how to make Maine a word class place to live and work. That's why I want to be your Governor."
