Statement on Richardson entry into Maine gubernatorial campaign

PORTLAND, ME - Maine Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Jacobson today released a statement regarding the entry of former Maine House Speaker John Richardson into the Maine gubernatorial campaign. Maine now has three former Democrat Speakers of the House, a former state attorney general, the President of the Senate and a former staffer from the Carter administration running for governor in 2010.

"Neither career politicians nor political staffers are the solution for Maine," stated Matt Jacobson. "Maine needs a new leader who has run businesses and who understands what it takes to create private sector jobs in diverse industries. We can't continue to repeat mistakes of the past with lawyers and bureaucrats who only see a government solution to every problem. It's time for a different direction for Maine.

"With the last 30 years of Maine's political class represented in this election, can there be any new ideas in that group? Haven't we tried their recommendations already? They have failed us and our state," Jacobson said.

"These are the very same people that increased taxes, grew the size and scope of Maine government and presided over the reduction of private sector opportunity. Their ideas and policies have caused soaring budget deficits, higher energy costs, and skyrocketing health insurance premiums.

"They got us into this economic mess - why would anyone think that more of the same will make it better?

"With this election for Governor, Maine has the opportunity to build an environment where we can attract, create, and retain jobs," Jacobson concluded. "We have tremendous people and unparalleled natural resources. We can seize this chance to make a different choice and make Maine a place of opportunity.
