Augusta, ME- Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Jacobson will participate in a State House "Counter Rally" at 12 noon today. The rally will be in opposition to any new tax increases that the Legislature may consider to fill the $400 million state budget gap.

"Augusta must learn to live within its means," Jacobson stated. "State spending grew so quickly that Maine people can no longer afford to pay the bill. Yet the political class in Augusta, like Washington, always wants more. They don't realize that for Maine families, there's nothing more to give.

"I oppose any and all proposals to raise taxes. Period. Maine people are some of the most highly-taxed in the nation. Higher taxes stifle innovation and job creation. Tax increases would take the state in the wrong direction.

"We need a new direction with new leadership in Augusta," said Jacobson. "Thirty years of career politicians has brought us to the tipping point. Maine needs an experienced and proven leader to establish priorities and hold the line on spending. That's what I will do as Maine's next Governor."

Four 2010 Gubernatorial Candidates Sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in Maine

Jacobson, LePage, Otten, and Poliquin make important commitment to taxpayers

Washington, D.C. - Four Republican candidates in the Maine gubernatorial race, Matt Jacobson, Paul LePage, Les Otten, and Bruce Poliquin, signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge this week. The Pledge commits signers to, "oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes."

To date, 34 U.S. Senators and 172 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, seven governors and over 1,100 state legislators have signed the Pledge.

"Americans, now more than ever, need leaders committed to fiscal responsibility and pro-growth economic policies," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "Americans are desperately searching for candidates and politicians that will protect their livelihoods and put theirwallets ahead of government coffers."

"By signing the Pledge, Candidates Jacobson, LePage, Otten, and Poliquin demonstrate their commitment to hardworking Mainer taxpayers. I applaud them for their leadership and dedication to the ideals of limited government and pro-growth policies," added Norquist.

"I strongly encourage, and challenge, every candidate for state and federal office to sign the Pledge."
